What type of bear is Ursa? Is Ursa male or female?

First of all, to find out whether Ursa is male or female, we must look into his/her lore, responses and even name. Ursa means "bear" in Latin, however it also means "female bear" in Portuguese. Ursa's alternative name in DotA Allstars was "Fuzzy Wuzzy", implying a more sensitive and feminine side to Ursa. Ursa also talks about his/her cubs. With my research, I found out that Ursa, in fact, is male. In his DotA 2 lore, they refer to him as a "he", his responses sound way too male, and the tribe he was part of strictly denotes that females take care of cubs and males are warriors, and Ursa was the best warrior of the tribe. Either Ursa is male, or naturally has way too much testosterone, which I find highly unlikely.

Onto the second question, **what species of bear is Ursa?** I did an immense amount of research on this topic, only to find there is no definite answer. In Ursa's lore, his tribe existed in Azshara in the Warcraft universe. Azshara is a deciduous region that is usually mountainous, so I can safely say that Ursa is a type of North American brown bear. Since Ursa has purple tipped fur, the closest species of bear is *Ursus arctos horribilis* (the generic grizzly bear), since it has silver tipped fur. Maybe since it's in a fictional universe, the color of the fur genetically changed from silver tipped to purple tipped.

**Conclusion**

After researching this topic, I believe Ursa is a male grizzly bear, however I cannot pinpoint the exact species since there is not enough information about Ursa.
